MacArthur and Emperor Hirohito

“The first meeting of Gen. MacArthur and Emperor Hirohito in Tokyo. Sept. 1945 at the General’s Headquarters.”

S/Sgt Charles Restifo claims to have shot this iconic image. It appears on page 113 of his Autobiography, reproduced below. On page 111, he writes:

In Tokyo I requested and received permission to photograph the Imperial Palace and was able to record a meeting between Emperor Hirohito and General MacArthur. The Palace was surrounded with the remains of a beautiful garden and moats with a cross bridge. The Emperor wore a formal top hat, black suit with tails and MacArthur his usual tans with his battlefield squashed, peaked cap, open neck shirt and no tie.

However, most sources credit Capt Gaetano Faillance, one of MacArthur’s personal photographers, with this image.
